The British Canoeing Awarding Body Paddlesport Instructor is an entry level point qualification. The qualification will support the instructor with practical skills such as kitting up a group and getting afloat, initial familiarisation activities, games and activities to support learning and how to use mini journeys to support learning, inspire adventure and exploration. This will be enhanced with support on how these sessions can be delivered in a way that is enjoyable, safe and rewarding.The Paddlesport Instructor qualification is designed for instructors running paddlesport taster/starter sessions within the safety management systems of clubs, centres or other organisations in:Very Sheltered Water environmentsCraft deemed suitable for a first-time experienceThe process of completing the qualification aims to help prepare candidates for their first paddlesport instructing role; ‘primed and ready’.
What are the prerequisites?
The candidate entry requirements are as follows:
- Full Home Nation Delivery Centre Membership;
- Home Nation Delivery Centre registration;
- British Canoeing Foundation Safety and Rescue Training;
- Personal paddling and rescue competence;
- 14 years of age, or older.
Candidates under 18 years of age should check the suitability of the course with a tutor before attendance.
What standard of personal skills are required?
Prior to attending the Paddlesport Instructor course, candidates are expected to have developed personal paddling and rescue competence in their preferred craft through in-house or independent training, practice and coaching. Remember that candidates choose to paddle one type of craft for the personal paddling and rescue skills assessment; sit on top kayak, stand up paddleboard, open canoe, or kayak. There is no bank-based option; taster/starter sessions are not typically delivered by bank-based instructors.
