Rolling a kayak is achievable for everyone.
Rolling is the black art of kayaking. When first achieved confidence levels go through the roof and allow you to push yourself further without the fear of swimming – with that in mind, we build the roll up using variable practice. Although this takes longer than other methods to learn it leads to fewer bad habits and retention is good over time, making it more transferable to the real environments where you need it to actually work!
We often see many people learning to roll very quickly, sometimes in under 10 minutes, but the learning practice here is block practice. For example, try it again, then again, then again; this continues until there is some success. The problem here is that the roll is learned so fast that it gets forgotten quickly – or worse when starting to paddle slightly harder water your roll fails and you swim, knocking your confidence. For some people this can cause them to lose the love for paddling altogether.
With paddlers that have had a roll and lost their way for whatever reason, we have a transferability issue meaning that there is an existing roll but it is poor and follows bad practice – this is slow to break and build up again. As humans we always fall back on what we first learned. So reconstructing a roll takes time.
